Lake Winona is a lake encompassed within the borders of Alexandria, Minnesota. It’s only 213 acres in size and around nine feet deep at its deepest point. Though not one of the Alexandria Chain of Lakes biggest, it’s a beautiful body of water, nonetheless. The city of Alexandria got its start in 1858 when Alexander and William Kinkead built a log cabin and hotel on the shores of Lake Agnes. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act giving anyone who lived on a piece of land for five consecutive years while tilling it, the right to own it. This led to 80 million acres of government own land being distributed by the turn of the century. Nevertheless, problems between the Dakota and white settlers reached a boiling point in the same year when a Dakota hunter killed some European settlers who had been trespassing on Dakota land. It further escalated out of control when the tribal leaders decided to continue killing the settlers in an attempt to regain back land taken by the United States government. This resulted in almost all of the original settlers fleeing the area, leaving their homes and businesses vacant. After six years, the Sioux finally agreed to a treaty allowing white settlers to establish settlements again. Since then, this area has grown into a thriving tourist destination.
