Named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, Lake Victoria is located in Douglas County on the southern side of Alexandria and a stone’s throw from Lake Geneva. It features Lake Victoria Resort and Lake Victoria Lodge, offering guests an assortment of amenities. The area surrounding Lake Victoria has a history that can be traced back 9,000 years ago, but it would be the Mississippian to first establish an organized society in these parts in 6 C.E. Historians believe this is where the Dakota came from. Other tribes such as the Chippewa most likely migrated to the area in the mid-17th century, which is also when the first Europeans began exploring the region. By the 1800s, settlers from various parts of Europe had begun staking claim to land in and around present-day Douglas County. Though treaties were in place to protect Dakota land, settlers continued to claim Dakota controlled land, which resulted in a Dakota boy shooting and killing a white family. With this, the tribe went to kill between 300 to 400 more settlers, sparking the Dakota War of 1862. This led to almost all of the original settlers fleeing, leaving their homes and businesses vacant. After a treaty was signed in 1868, the order was again established, but it wouldn’t be until the 1880s that this area again experienced growth.
