Named for Florence Miltona Roadruck, the wife of early pioneer Benjamin Franklin Roadruck who established a homestead in the area of Miltona Township, this lake is 5,724 acres in size, 105 feet deep at its deepest point, and features 17 miles of shoreline. Lake Miltona is located between Miltona and Leaf Valley Townships, with the city of Alexandria only 20 minutes away via MN-29 South. The area began growing when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act of 1862, allowing anyone who lived and tilled the land rights to ownership. This resulted in a surge of European settlers migrating to the area and staking their claims. Nevertheless, the Dakota War of 1862 erupted over European settlers breaching multiple treaties established by the United States government, causing many of the original settlers to flee the area, leaving many homes and businesses vacant. Over six years later, the Treaty of Laramie eased some of the tensions between the Dakota tribe and European settlers, allowing development to begin where it left off starting in the early 1870s.
